Jules Fonteyne was known for his etchings, which he neither dated nor numbered. His family estimates that there are only about ten of this work, "The Dancers."

He was an important Bruges resident with considerable merit. His still lifes are very powerful, like this one!

This is an intriguing painting. It depicts the Meebrug, Bruges' oldest stone bridge, in the mist. He studied at the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts under Flori Van Acker. He was known for his copies of old masters like Hans Memling.

This is St. James's Church at night. A somewhat frightening scene. Emiel trained with Lionel Poupaert and Jules Fonteyne, among others. Gold, yellow, and purple were his favorite colors.

This is as impressionistic as it gets. Up close, it's just specks of paint, but from further away, you can see the sun and shadows on the beguinage wall. Bernard still lives on Baron Ruzettelaan.

While Julien was painting along the Seine, a man approached him and invited him to come work as a gardener at his home. The man was Claude Monet.

This is the Peerdebrug. Leo became deaf and dumb at a young age. He could be seen in many Bruges living rooms and painted every corner of beautiful Bruges.

Here he painted his teacher, Flori Van Acker, for whom he greatly admired. He also wrote several books about Bruges, including "The School of Bruges" in 1990, in which he presented some 110 painters from the city.

He is considered the godfather of the Bruges School. This scene was painted in Lissewege, the white village in Bruges.
