The Bruges school

The Bruges School was a community of artists united by their deep love for the enchanting city of Bruges. These talented artists, active for generations, created works that fit within diverse art movements, with each piece reflecting the unique spirit of the times and the innovative techniques they employed. The Bruges Art Academy and its inspiring teachers played a crucial role in cherishing this artistic heritage, with each generation passing on their passion and knowledge to the next.

From approximately 1850 to 1980, this remarkable group comprised hundreds of painters, some of whom became professional artists (not always successfully), while others embraced their passion as dedicated amateurs. They gathered at art academies such as Kring 46, Iris, Lumière, and the West-Vlaamse Kunstkring, leading to a rich artistic dialogue. Many artists, including renowned painters from France and the Netherlands, were drawn to Bruges to capture its charming scenes on canvas. Our collection proudly displays the beautiful works of these artists, each bearing witness to their unique style and the era in which they lived. At Brugarto, we are passionate about making these extraordinary artworks accessible to everyone. Come and experience the breathtaking beauty of Bruges, beautifully captured on canvas, in our collection!
